Located at the right heart of Lhasa, Jorkhang Temple was built during Songtsen Gonpo's reign by princess Wencheng of Tang Dynasty, 647 A.D. At first it’s called “Resa”, and later, “Resa” became the name of the city, and gradually became “Lhasa”, which we called today.
Lying at about 1,000 meters to the east of the Potala Palace, the Jokhang Temple is the oldest architecture in Lhasa and has a long history of 1,400 years and has a greatest reputation in Tibetan Buddhism. All Tibetan pilgrims from all over the world regard Jorkhang as the holy land in their mind.
Also known as the Tsuglhakhang in Tibetan, the Jokhang Temple is the most revered religious structure in Tibet. In 2000, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an addition to the Potala Palace. The State Tourism Administration appraised the Jokhang Temple as 4A-level tourism site in 2001.
